Sankofa Hosts Annual Charity Ball

Posted on Friday, March 01, 2013

In annual fashion, Sankofa will host its Charity Ball on March 30 at the Ramada Geneva Lakefront hotel.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the event officially beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until 9 p.m.

Each year, members of the Sankofa, the Black Student Union of the Colleges, work to create a unique and vibrant program to celebrate the year-long efforts of the organization, as well as raise money for a charity decided on by the Sankofa board.

This year, proceeds from the ball will help fund Hand in Hand for Haiti (HHH), an organization for the collective response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti following the catastrophic earthquake that hit the country on Jan. 12, 2010. All proceeds for HHH go toward the development of the newly built tuition free school that provides meals, a clinic, free textbooks and more for the students.

In previous years, Sankofa has donated to both international and local organizations, including Water for Sudan, the Dean Henderson and Lillian Collins Scholarships, Plan USA, Geneva Theatre Guild's Youth Theater and scholarships for students from both Geneva High School and Finger Lakes Community College.

The Charity Ball, which has been going on for more than 15 years, features many different events, including performances, such as dancing, singing, art displays and much more. A delicious meal also is served along with a silent auction that embodies the purpose of this event, which is to raise money and donate to a local or international organization.

Sankofa is devoted to increasing and maintaining awareness of issues that affect Africa and diaspora. The club accomplishes its goals through weekly discussion based meetings; the Charity Ball as a means to building our community financially; the passing of responsibility to the younger generation with the Ujimaa Board; and via other events that recognize and celebrate Africa and its heritage, such as Kwanzaa. Sankofa is a nonexclusive organization that welcomes all.
