Celebrate Shabbat 250

Posted on Wednesday, February 20, 2013

HWS Hillel invites community members to the first Shabbat 250. The goal is to get 250 students, faculty, staff, and community members to join in celebrating Shabbat with a festive meal. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1, in the Vandervort Room of the Scandling Campus Center.

"Last year we held a ‘Shabbat 200' where we set an ambitious goal of 200, but had 233 attend. We decided that this year we would aim even higher and attempt to get 250 attendees," says Emily Hamburger '13, president of Hillel and house manager of Abbe Center for Jewish Life.

Kosher Shabbat dinners started after the dedication of the Abbe Center for Jewish Life in 2007 and have been a strong HWS tradition ever since. "I feel that our Shabbat dinners have helped to strengthen the Jewish community and have been a positive influence on the entire HWS community. Our Shabbat dinners provide an excellent opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue," says Hamburger.

Each week, Sodexo prepares a kosher meal of traditional Jewish food at the Abbe Center. The attendees light Shabbat candles and say the prayer to welcome in the Sabbath. They also join in saying traditional prayers over wine and challah.

"We are so grateful that we have 'Showtime' Joe Hatfield, who cooks our Shabbat dinners every week," says Hamburger.

The Abbe Center holds many other events for the Jewish community throughout the year such as the Rosh Hashanah Eve dinner, the pre-fast dinner before Yom Kippur, Pasta Night during the Sukkoth holiday, and the Holocaust Awareness Week programs. The events are open to all regardless of religious affiliation.

Kosher Shabbat dinners are held on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life, with a usual gathering of 35 to 55 people. If students are interested in attending the weekly Shabbat dinner, they can RSVP by 4:30 p.m. on the Wednesday before to shabbat@hws.edu. For Shabbat 250, please RSVP by Feb. 27 to Shabbat250@hws.edu.
