Art Exhibit Opens at Davis Gallery

Professor of Writing and Rhetoric Cheryl Forbes and Francesca Pittelli '14 have collaborated to present an art exhibition on campus beginning Friday, Jan. 25 that will feature a selection of works from the Colleges' collection.
Titled "From the Outside Arranging In," the exhibit will be held in Davis Gallery at Houghton House through Saturday, Feb. 9. The opening reception is scheduled to take place at the gallery from 7 to 9:00 p.m. on Jan. 25.
The exhibition will showcase a variety of paintings, including works by painter Milton Avery and pieces by HWS students who have received the Arthur Dove '03 Art Award, which was established by William B. Carr in honor of Arthur Dove, a well-known 20th-century painter from the region and Hobart College alumnus.
Forbes, who has a particular interest in art and fashion, selected the artwork that will be on view. Under Forbes' guidance, Pittelli planned and arranged the exhibit.
Pittelli, an art history major, was inspired to organize a show on campus similar to one she had learned about this past summer while interning at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass. The Williams College Museum of Art, also in Williamstown, presented a series of shows in which community members each had the opportunity to reorganize the artwork on display, presenting their own unique arrangement.
"From the Outside Arranging In," allows individuals to choose and arrange pieces on site from the Colleges' collection to represent their personal tastes. The series is a creative way to encourage members of the HWS and Geneva communities to attend an art opening at Davis Gallery.
Forbes joined the HWS faculty in 1993. She earned her B.A. and M.A. from Maryland and Ph.D. from Michigan State.
