Alum Earns ‘Picture of the Year' from SI

A photograph taken by former Hobart sailor Amory Ross '06 was named one of the "Pictures of the Year" by Sports Illustrated online. The photograph was one of a handful of stunning sports pictures featured on the magazine's website - and was the only sailing photograph to earn a "Picture of the Year" title.
While aboard PUMA's Mar Mostro as the crew's onboard media member, Ross took the photo during the nine-month 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race around the world. The striking picture captures Michi Mueller of Germany as he adjusts a sail during the sixth leg of the race from Itajai, Brazil, to Miami, Florida.
Ross, of Newport, R.I., is a specialist in nautical photography, video and multi-media. He has been a member of many racing crews including Oracle Team USA.
A four-year member of the HWS sailing team, Ross helped the Colleges earn 14 ICSA Championship berths, including the 2005 Team Race and Coed Dinghy National Championships. A double major in economics and public policy, he spent a semester studying off campus in Washington, D.C. Ross turned his love of sailing and photography into a business, Amory Ross Images. His work also has been featured on the cover of Sail, Sailing World, Seahorse International Sailing, and Yachting World.
