The sixth-ranked Hobart College hockey team scored once in the first period and twice in the second tonight as the Statesmen blanked host Nazareth, 3-0, in an ECAC West men's hockey game at the Sports Centre at MCC.
The defeat was the fifth straight for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 2-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the ECAC West. The Statesmen remained unbeaten at 5-0-2 and 2-0-1 in conference play. The two teams play again Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Sports Centre.
Senior goalie Nick Broadwater finished with 19 saves in all 60 minutes in goal for the Statesmen. It's his third shutout of the year and 10th of his career which is a new Hobart career record.
The Statesmen outshot Nazareth 31-19 overall, including 10-6 in the opening period. Hobart scored the only goal of the period at 6:08 as junior Keith Clarke converted a centering pass from sophomore Terrance O'Neill for his second goal of the season.
In the second period, Hobart converted on a power play opportunity. With Nazareth's Zach Lewis in the penalty box for interference, first-year Bo Webster scored at 9:02 off assists from senior Ryan Corcoran and sophomore Brad McBride. It was Webster's third tally this season. Four minutes later, first-year Ben Gamache closed out the scoring with an even-strength goal off assists from junior Brett Riley and first-year Mac Olson. It was Gamache's second goal of the year.
Nazareth had six power play chances of its own, but failed to convert. Nazareth had a 5-on-3 opportunity early in the third period and a five-minute chance later in the period, but couldn't cash in. The Statesmen went 1-for-4 on the power play.
Ed Zdolshek played all 60 minutes in goal for the Golden Flyers and made 28 saves.
