The Hobart College basketball team earned its first win of the 2012-13 season with a 69-56 triumph over Messiah College in the consolation game of the Homewood Suites Tip-Off Tournament in Grantham, Pa. Senior guard Stefan Thompson led the Statesmen with a game-high 21 points to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Hobart (1-1) scored the first seven points of the contest and led by as many as nine midway through the first half, but a 15-5 surge by the Falcons (0-2) put the home team into the lead, 23-22, with 5:52 to go in the stanza. Sophomore guard Andrew Hoy buried a 3-pointer to put the Statesmen back in front for good. Hobart closed the half on a 14-4 run to carry a 36-27 lead into halftime.
The Statesmen enjoyed a double digit lead for most of the second half, never letting their advantage dip below seven points down the stretch.
Thompson was 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and handed out a team-high three assists. Junior forward Richie Bonney added 20 points, a team-high nine rebounds, a team-high three steals, and a game-high two blocks. Sophomore guard Trey Blanding netted nine points. Senior forward Sean Peer pulled down eight rebounds, helping the visitors to a 40-31 edge on the glass.
Messiah had four players reach double figures led by Brad Bolen's 16 points. Zac Hoy, Derek Mosley, and Scott Bolen each recorded 10 points.
Hobart shot 41.1 percent from the floor with seven 3-pointers and was 16-of-22 from the free throw line. The Falcons shot 38.5 percent from the field, also draining seven threes, and went 9-of-13 from the stripe.
The Statesmen will make their Bristol Gym debut at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, when they host Buffalo State.
