The second-seeded William Smith soccer team advanced to the Liberty League Championship game topping RIT 4-2 on penalty kicks after tying the No. 3 seed Tigers 1-1 through double overtime tonight on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.

The Herons will host No. 4 seed Union in the Liberty League Tournament Championship on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m on Cozzens Field. The fourth-seeded Dutchwomen upset No. 1 RPI 1-0 in the other semifinal played tonight in Troy, N.Y. William Smith is now 12-2-3 overall this season, while RIT finishes the year with a 11-5-2 record.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore Brenna Kincaid put the Herons up 1-0 in the 53rd minute. She took the ball away from a Tiger defender who was trying to make the clear, and fired from inside the box into the right side of the goal.

RIT tied things up in the 85th minute. Emily Shoemaker sent a pass into the box, finding Jaimie Lewandowski, who sent a header into the back of the net. It was her fourth goal of the season.

In just over the final four minutes of regulation, the Herons tallied four corner kicks, but could not convert. On the third of the series, Kincaid launched the ball into the box, and sophomore Madeline Buckley fired on goal, but it was knocked away by RIT's back Emily Shoemaker.

Neither team could find the game-winner through two overtime periods, however, the Tigers had a few chances outshooting William Smith 1-0 in the first OT and then 3-1 in the second.

Heron first-year Kathryn Busa started off the penalty kicks. Her hard shot was saved by RIT keeper, Amanda Murray. Chelsea Shoemaker led off for the Tigers, but her kick sailed high and left. First-year Nicki Johnson was next, and sent home a shot for the Herons. Lewandowski answered for RIT with a shot into the left corner.

Sophomore MaryClaire Pelletier made it 2-1. Gwenn Neuhaus was next for the Tigers, but she banged her shot off the crossbar. Senior Renee Jensen gave William Smith a 3-1 advantage. Alexa Martinez connected for RIT to make it 3-2, but senior Whitney Frary clinched a spot in the championship match for the Herons.

The Herons enjoyed a 21-11 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corners. Junior Chelsea Dunay finished with three saves in all 110 minutes in goal for William Smith. Murray stopped nine shots in goal for RIT.
