Tonight marks the Women's Collective Annual Take Back the Night event. At 8 p.m. William Smith women will meet on the Smith Green for a walk around the campus and through downtown Geneva. Men of Hobart are invited to join the march at the brick HWS sign at the corner of Hamilton and Pulteney streets, to continue on to Coxe Hall for a candlelight vigil at 9:30 p.m. Those who wish to speak may do so during the vigil.
Organizers say the vigil "is an extremely powerful event" during which there is a significant feeling of solidarity among students.
The annual march is part of an international event started in Germany in 1973, which became a national effort in 1978 in San Francisco. Dozens of college and university groups now hold such rallies to increase awareness.
Women's Collective meets every Monday night at 9 p.m. at the Women's Resource Center in the basement of Miller.
