Paint the Campus Purple

Posted on Thursday, October 11, 2012

The members of Student Activities and the residents of the Domestic Violence Awareness House encourage the HWS community to don purple attire on Friday, Oct. 12, as part of their Domestic Violence Awareness month campaign.

The Purple Ribbon is a widely recognized symbol representing a commitment to end domestic violence. They will also table in the Scandling Campus Center on Friday to spread the word about a walk that Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes, Inc. is hosting on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The first Awareness Walk to Shine the Light on Domestic Violence will take place along the Geneva Lakefront. Safe Harbors provides a 24-hour hotline, support groups, individual counseling and personal and legal advocacy to victims of rape, sexual assault and harassment, and other domestic violence in Yates, Ontario, and Seneca counties.

Registration for the event is at 6:30 p.m., and the walk is at 7 p.m. The registration fee is $10 per person and $25 per family. Visit http://safeharborsfl.org for more information.

The Domestic Violence Awareness House first had a presence on campus in 2010. Residents try to take a stand against domestic violence through educating others. As a group, they participate in events that help educate about domestic violence, such as discussions, fundraisers and educational movie nights.
