William Smith first-year Zoe Eth notched her first collegiate goal to clinch a 1-0 victory over St. Lawrence in a Liberty League soccer match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. With their third straight 1-0 win, the Herons improve to 9-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in conference play.
St. Lawrence falls to 6-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Liberty League. Junior goalie Chelsea Dunay didn't need to make a save in all 90 minutes to earn her sixth shutout of the season.
With just 1:34 left in the first half, the Herons scored the lone goal of the game. Sophomore Caitlyn Mitchell crossed the ball right in front of the goal, finding Eth at the far post. Eth sent a diving header into the back of the net.
St. Lawrence had its best scoring opportunity of the match 30 seconds before the break. In a flurry of action in front of the goal, Hannah Calvelli blasted a shot on goal that was rejected by a William Smith defender just in front of the goal line.
In the 54th minute, the Herons almost stretched their lead to two. Sophomore Madeline Buckley drilled a shot on goal, but the Saints' keeper, Kelsey West was there to push the ball just over the crossbar. West finished with eight saves for St. Lawrence.
In the second half, the Saints had another chance to tie things up. In the 67th minute, William Smith was called for a foul at the top of the box. Stephanie Sayward took the free kick, but her shot sailed over the crossbar.
The Herons outshot St. Lawrence, 17-8. William Smith earned 11 corners, while the Saints had one.
The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 12 when they host Vassar for another Liberty League contest beginning at 4 p.m.
