Four different Hobart College soccer players scored to give the Statesmen to a 4-1 victory over visiting Clarkson in the Liberty League opener for both teams played on Cozzens Field this afternoon.
With the win, Hobart improves to 5-1-0, while the Golden Knights fall to 0-6-1.
The Statesmen scored two goals on the first two shots of the match. In the seventh minute, junior Kaeghan Kelly sent a pass into the box to find senior Alex Kittleberger on the right side of the goal. Kittelberger placed a header into the back of the net. Kittelberger leads Hobart with four goals this season.
Just 1:13 later, first-year Jacob Fox stole the ball from a Clarkson defender at the top of the box, and fired a shot from there to give Hobart a 2-0 lead. It was Fox's second goal this fall.
In the 30th minute, senior Ian McGarty scored his first goal of the year, stretching the Statesmen lead to 3-0. Shortly after McGarty entered the match, he stole the ball from a Golden Knight defender at the top of the box, and scored on a play that was strikingly similar to Fox's earlier tally.
In the 63rd minute, Marco Parisi put Clarkson on the board when he was able to capitalize on a Hobart turnover. He drilled a shot from just inside the box that was just out of the reach of the diving Statesmen goalkeeper, sophomore Mike Lucas.
Senior Caetano Sanchez capped the Hobart victory in the 68th minute, recording his second goal of the season. First-year Marco Ronning launched a corner kick into the crowd in front of the goal, and Sanchez was able to redirect the ball into the net to make it 4-1.
Lucas played the opening 77:57 in goal for the Statesmen and finished with three saves. First-year Tyler Serafine played the final 12:03, and made one save in his first collegiate action. Scott Stuart played all 90 minutes in net for the Golden Knights and stopped four shots.
The Statesmen enjoyed a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 4-0 lead in corners.
Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 28, when it hosts Rensselaer for a Liberty League match beginning at 4 p.m.
