Herons Down Clarkson 3-0

Posted on Saturday, September 22, 2012

William Smith senior Whitney Frary recorded two goals and earned an assist, all in the first half, as the Heron soccer team downed Clarkson 3-0 in the Liberty League opener for both schools this afternoon at the Golden Knights' Hantz Turf Field.

William Smith moved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Liberty League. Clarkson lost their second straight game after beginning the season on a five-game unbeaten streak and now stand at 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference.

The Herons scored just three minutes into the game. Sophomore Madeline Buckley sent a pass into the area. Frary misstruck her shot in the middle of her shin, but Clarkson keeper, Kim Kenline, was guarding the near post and the bounding ball made it past the goal line for a 1-0 William Smith lead at 3:01.

Frary's second goal came after she maneuvered around the Clarkson defense to get in close and fired a shot into the upper left corner at 28:24. First-year Zoe Jackson Gibson set up the play.

William Smith concluded the scoring with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half as Frary sent a pass from the right side into the penalty box and found the foot of sophomore Brenna Kincaid, who one-timed the cross into the top left corner at 35:22. It was Kincaid's first goal this season.

In the second half, Clarkson had its chances, with the best one coming on a hard shot from Megan Strijek. Strijek blasted a shot from about 20 yards out that was deflected just enough by Herons' keeper junior Chelsea Dunay to hit the crossbar. However, the shot had enough momentum on it that it bounced all the way back up to the bar again, but the ball never crossed the line and William Smith maintained its shutout.

The Herons out shot Clarkson 14-5 in the match and held a 2-0 edge in corner kick chances. Kenline made six saves in the game, while Dunay made three stops for William Smith to secure her third shutout this season.

The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 28 when they travel to take on Rensselaer in another Liberty League match beginning at 4 p.m.
