South Asian Islam discussed

Author and Associate Professor of Religion at Mt. Holyoke College, Amina Steinfels will present "Sufism & Orthodoxy in South Asian Islam" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27 in the Sanford Room of the Warren Hunting Smith Library.
The talk is sponsored by the Asian Studies Department and is a part of the South Asia Speaker Series. Steinfels is the author of "Knowledge Before Action: Islamic Learning and Sufi Practice in the Life of Sayyid Jalal al-din Bukhari Makhdum-I Jahaniyan."
Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Anthony Cerulli, Associate Professor of Economics Feisal Khan, and Associate Professor of Political Science Vikash Yadav conceived the South Asia Speaker Series in the fall of 2009. The purpose of the series is to foster awareness on campus of South Asian culture, history and scholarship on issues pertaining to the countries in South Asia.
