Homecoming Weekend 2012

Posted on Thursday, September 13, 2012

Homecoming and Family Weekend makes its much anticipated return on Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23. Last year, more than 3,000 visitors made their way to HWS during Homecoming festivities, and this year promises to bring an even larger crowd for a weekend of Heron and Statesmen pride.

"Homecoming truly highlights the vibrancy of the HWS community - and this year's celebrations promise to be the best yet," says Director of Parent Relations and Stewardship Kelly Young. "We've worked all year to put together a weekend that will be memorable - and fun - for students, alums and families alike."

Favorite HWS tradition The Fall Nationals will return, along with the second annual Barn Burner Tailgate Lunch, offering families the chance to play games and eat picnic goods in preparation for the ever-popular soap box derby race down Winn-Seeley Hill.

One this year's Homecoming highlights is the first-ever Quad-a-palooza. The all night extravaganza will kick-off with a barbecue dinner, and includes a host of activities that are fun for the whole family - and don't forget to join the "CABaret" sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, hosted by celebrity emcees Kathy Killius Regan '82, P'13, director of alumnae relations, and Jared Weeden '91, director of alumni relations.

Open houses will be held on Friday afternoon by various offices across campus giving alums and their families the chance to see the vibrant life on campus firsthand. Open house opportunities include the Office of Intercultural Affairs, the Abbe Center for Jewish Life, the campus' fraternities and the Finger Lakes Institute. On Friday evening, join Chaplain Lesley Adams and Rt. Rev. George E. Packard '66 in a special event as the Colleges celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. John's Chapel with a ceremony and reception.

On Saturday morning, grab breakfast and listen as President Mark D. Gearan outlines the advances made by the Colleges in the past year, as well as initiatives for the future during his annual "State of the Colleges Address."

Mini-College sessions will be held on Saturday morning, giving alums the chance to head back to school this fall. Classes range from Professor of Political Science Iva Deutchman's discussion of the upcoming Presidential Election, or Associate Professor of Geoscience Nan Arens' "What's New on Mars" talk about the Curiosity Rover.

Be sure to check out athletics events being held on the various fields of the campus. The William Smith field hockey will hold an alumnae game on McCooey Field on Friday evening, with the current Herons field hockey team taking on the University of Rochester the next day at 2 p.m. on McCooey field.  The Hobart Soccer team will also be taking to the field on Saturday with a game against Clarkson University at 2 p.m. on Cozzens Field.

Of course, don't miss your chance to support the Statesmen football team as they face the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 1 p.m. on Boswell Field located in the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.
