The William Smith College soccer team is ranked No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire NCAA Division III poll of the season. The Herons were tabbed No. 2 in the preseason poll and moved up to the top spot after a 2-0-0 opening weekend.
It's the first time William Smith has been ranked No. 1 in the country in the NSCAA poll. It's believed to be the first time the Herons have topped the rankings since they were voted No. 1 at the end of the 1993 regular season by the Intercollegiate Soccer Coaches Association of America.
William Smith opened the 2012 season hosting the Heron Cup. On Friday, the Herons topped Babson 3-0, and on Saturday, William Smith cruised to a 4-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Senior Whitney Frary and sophomore Madeline Buckley have each recorded a team-high five points on two goals and an assist. Senior Renee Jensen has notched four assists. Junior goalie Chelsea Dunay, the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week, earned her first two collegiate shutouts, stopping seven shots over the weekend.
