Dean delivers keynote in Croatia

Posted on Thursday, September 06, 2012

Professor of Political Science Jodi Dean recently delivered a keynote address at a Green Academy held in Vis, Croatia. Sponsored by the Green Europe Foundation, in cooperation with the Heinrich Boell Stiftung, the week-long academy focused on the Commons as a concept for democratic governance. Dean was asked to speak on the occupation movement and the next steps for Occupy Wall Street. She also participated in the working group on the Digital Commons, one of five groups doing focused work during the week.

"I was really pleased to get to participate in this international conversation," explains Dean, who is serving this year as the director of the Fisher Center. "Since the Fisher Center's theme is 'Gender Collectivity and the Commons' I feel like I can bring back to HWS a sense of how some European activists are using the idea of the commons."

Dean has been with the Colleges since 1993. She received a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. She is a past recipient of the faculty award for scholarship. Dean is also the author of a wide-ranging body of work including "Aliens in America: Conspiracy Cultures from Outerspace to Cyberspace" and "Publicity's Secret: How Technoculture Capitalizes on Democracy."
