Miller ’14 Markets Small Business

Posted on Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Emily Miller '14 spent her summer participating in an internship with East End Trading Company (EETC) in Scituate, Mass. The company, still in its infancy, was founded by her sister, Brittany Miller and Benjamin D'Innocenzo '10.

The company specializes in "bringing some of Southeast Asia's most hidden gems to the Western world, and specifically to the Hamptons and Cape Cod fashion world." Throughout the internship, Miller assisted the business by implementing various marketing tactics, such as using Facebook, Twitter and other social media, to publicize the business.

Miller, a public policy major with a concentration in children and families, admits that she did not expect to get involved in this unique industry, but she has learned a lot about the inner-workings of small businesses.

"I've honestly learned so much about business while working for EETC," she says. "Since I've been engaged with the small business world, I am now considering pursuing business after graduation. I'm interested in non-profit work and would love to establish an organization of my own to help employ and train unskilled workers."

She notes the experience gave her a crash course in small business management and an idea of how to make her vision a reality.

On campus, Miller is involved in various clubs and activities. She is a member of the William Smith club field hockey team, the Students for a Free Tibet club, Habitat for Humanity club, the Campus Activities Board, and is an employee at the Cellar Pub. She participated in the Alternative Spring Break trip to Norlina, as well as in the HWS and Nazareth College Holocaust remembrance trip to Germany and Poland.
