Kylie Hart ‘13 interned at Pershing LLC. in Jersey City, N.J., this summer. The company provides technology, operational, trading, investment and practice management solutions to financial services firms and advisers. A subsidiary of the Bank of New York Mellon, the nation's oldest continuously operating bank, Pershing LLC is also a clearinghouse in the financial markets.
A Latin language major with a double minor in economics and European studies, Hart interned in the segment marketing department in the Global Strategy and Communications Division.
"Though I never saw myself in marketing, it is a great way to learn about the services and products the company has to offer." she says. "My group focused on the financial advisory industry and I conducted a lot of research around trends. I had the opportunity to draft thoughtful leadership campaigns and to contribute to the team in other ways. Whether it was creating documents for customers to see or using social media for practice management techniques, it was a rewarding experience to be a part of their team."
Throughout her experience at Pershing, Hart says she recognized the importance of her education at William Smith.
"A liberal arts degree is great in the workplace because the skills you need often are taught in some of the humanities classes. Critical reading, research and writing is something any profession requires and studying Latin has really helped me," she explains.
Hart says she was also better prepared for the internship because of her study abroad experience in Brussels in 2011.
When she is on campus, Hart runs the William Smith club lacrosse team with her sister Krissie Hart'13 and Alexandra Galasso'13. She is a member of Eta Sigma Phi, the National Classics Honor Society, and was recently nominated to be on the committee for the Stewardson Society.
