Assertive networking paid off for mathematics major Emery Han '13. This past winter, Han attended the Wall Street Experience in New York City and met several alums working in the finance industry. While visiting Russell Investments, Han met Todd Morley '83, founding partner of Guggenheim Securities and founder of G2 Investment Group. He followed up with Morley after the visit.
"I asked about potential opportunities to meet with him and interview in New York City, and eventually I secured an internship with G2 Investment Group," he says.
Han began his internship with G2 Investment Group working in the chairman's office, working directly with the chief executive officer and the other directors to research direct investment opportunities across various private sectors and global industries. His initial responsibilities included providing firm and industry insights to his supervisors.
Throughout the summer, Han has rotated through different parts of the company based on his own interests. Currently, he is working in the Capital Markets group, trading illiquid credits with a team of executives. Next he intends to move to the Office of the Real Estate Credit Opportunities and learn about investing in distressed real estate credits.
G2 Investment Group was established in response to the global financial crisis and it seeks to recognize new investment opportunities, such as credit-dislocation in the post-crisis world.
"I am very interested in the investment industry and this is exactly the opportunity I was looking for," he says.
On campus, Han is the videographer for Hobart basketball and is a student assistant in the Office of Career Services. He participated in the alternative spring break program, cleaning the Ohio River in Kentucky.
Han was recently accepted to Columbia University for engineering. He will graduate from both Hobart and Columbia with degrees in mathematics and engineering in five years. Last summer, Han interned with York Capital Investments, a hedge fund in New York City.
