Bartlett Presents "Hedda Gabler"

Posted on Friday, April 06, 2012

Delivering a captivating and ultimately disturbing exploration of the individual's ability to control his or her destiny, "Hedda Gabler" will open for a three-night engagement on Thursday, April 12 in Bartlett Theatre.

Directed by Professor of Education Pat Collins, the cast is comprised of Alexander Beyer '13 of Tubingen, Germany, Tyler Hatton-Bullock '14 of Putney, Vt., Jake Deitrich '14 of Haverford, Pa., Michelle Feda '15 of Sudbury, Mass., Lorcan Jowers '14 of Amagansett, N.Y., Bevin O'Connor '12 of Santa Clarita, Ca., and Ava Pavao '14 of Franklin, Mass.

"Featuring some of the most demanding dramatic roles in theatre, the play promises a challenging evening of theatre for actors and audience alike," says Collins. "As a psychological exploration of the human condition, Ibsen's play has a universal resonance which still speaks to us today."

Originally written by Scandinavian playwright Henrik Ibsen, the play was last produced on the Bartlett Theatre stage in 1982. This new production of Ibsen's classic, newly adapted by Jon Robin Baitz, follows the young and independent Hedda Gabler (O'Connor) as she attempts to evade an unfulfilling marriage to George Tessman (Beyer).

"The play is often read as a social commentary about the stifling effects of a middle class culture which is at best indifferent, and more often hostile, to the needs and desires of women," explains Collins. "In the character of Hedda, we find a portrait of an individual whose final answer to a number of timeless existential questions is disturbing but which also validates our own search and challenges us to give these same questions serious and careful consideration in our own lives."

The play's production team is comprised of Stage Manager Pearl Kerber '13 of Hamilton, N.Y., Assistant Stage Manager Kat DePietro '15 of East Greenwich, R.I., Special Assistant Sarina Rivera '12 of Rochester, N.Y., Lightboard Operator Nate Coe '13 of Amherst, Mass., Bartlett Theatre Technical Director Bill Burd and Costume Designer Cynthia Brookhouse.

"Hedda Gabler" will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14 in the Bartlett Theatre in Coxe Hall. Tickets are $5 general admission, and free to HWS students. Tickets will be available from the box office in Coxe Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m. each night. This play is not recommended for children.
