President Mark D. Gearan will share his leadership story and describe how leaders can impact their communities through service, civic engagement and collaborative leadership during the Centennial Center for Leadership's (CCL) fourth Leadership Café. The event will be held at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, March 5, in the Hirshson Ballroom of Hirshson Hall.
"President Gearan's leadership reflects a number of the themes presented during the Leadership Institute, which is leadership requires self awareness, work with others and calls for action," explains CCL Associate Director Amy Forbes. "His commitment to addressing critical needs within our communities is truly what we hope to pass along to young leaders. He can also share, specifically, the ways in which he has initiated change, brought different perspectives together when working on a task or overcome obstacles within leadership work. We are excited that he could join us."
This Leadership Café is a follow-up session to the January 2012 Leadership Institute. Students from HWS, DeSales and Geneva high schools have been invited to return to hear from Gearan and engage in continued leadership development. Community members and other HWS students are invited to participate in the Leadership Café. Following this event, Leadership Institute participants will have lunch and participate in a session, titled "The Power of an Idea: Social Entrepreneurship," with Gearan.
Gearan, who headed the Peace Corps before accepting the HWS presidency in 1999, is chair of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service and chair of the Talloires Network Steering Committee. He is also a member of the Leadership Council of ServiceNation. He is the past chair of both the Annapolis Group and the National Campus Compact and served as a Board member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and The Partnership of Public Service.
Past Leadership Café speakers have included Professor of Economics Tom Drennen, Instructor of Philosophy Rodmon King and Head William Smith Soccer Coach Aliceann Wilber.
Designed to be unrehearsed and uncensored, the Leadership Café is an event held on the second Thursday of every month that invites campus leaders to share their leadership path and experiences. The event is hosted as part of the CCL's ongoing support of students who participated in the 2012 Leadership Institute. The event is intended to teach the campus that leadership is not effortless or innate, but is, instead, a learning process worth examining.
