Next week, Jon Lehrer and members of his dance company, LehrerDance, will work with HWS dance students to perfect their techniques while Lehrer simultaneously developes a new duet for his company.
Arriving Monday, Oct. 24, the dance company will be on campus to teach three classes. LehrerDance will then participate in a public Choreography Showing with students taking Dance Composition II on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Winn-Seeley Theater. The event is free and open to the campus and the Geneva community.
The showing will include a performance of one of Lehrer's most famous works, "Morphic Slip." "In Morphic Slip, dancers Jennifer Huffman and Theodore Krzykowski costumed in bobsled racer-looking suits, moved like reptiles along the stage floor before melding into more sculptural intertwinings of bodies," said a Buffalo News review.
Lehrer's choreography, inspired by jazz and modern dance, has an athletic twist and unique movement. Dance Magazine praises Lehrer's company and his work, writing that his spirit "showcases the sunny ‘I love to dance' exuberance."
Based in Buffalo, N.Y., LehrerDance was founded in July 2007 by Lehrer, who continues to serve as the company's artistic director. Lehrer, a master's graduate of University of Buffalo, has been dancing since the age of 19, when he attended his first dance class at Buffalo in order to fulfill a dare posed by a friend. The class taken on a dare evolved into a passion that has led Lehrer to pursue a career in dance, teaching both in the U.S. and internationally.
As a professional, Lehrer was the associate director, 10-year company member, and resident choreographer for Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago. Lehrer has also performed with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, John Passafiume Dancers, at Resorts Casino/ Hotel in Atlantic City, and in the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. He has been featured on the cover of Dance Teacher magazine, is on the advisory board of Dance Spirit magazine, and his company, LehrerDance, has been featured in Dance Magazine several times.
Lehrer has received many awards, including the University at Buffalo Zodiaque Dance Company Distinguished Alumni Award, and most recently Chicago National Association of Dance Master's Artistic Achievement Award. He was commissioned by the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters to write their Modern Dance Syllabus, which is utilized by teachers all across the country to properly teach and introduce their students to modern dance.
