McCorkle Presents Poetry Reading

Assistant Professor of Africana Studies James McCorkle '76 will perform as part of the Musical Moments recital series at the Geneva Public Library on Friday, Sept. 9.  McCorkle is the author of "The Still Performance" (a study of post-modern American poetry), the editor of "Conversant Essays: Contemporary Poets on Poetry," and most recently, with Jeff Gray and Mary McAleer Balkun, "Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Poets and Poetry." 

He is also a poet, focused on contemporary poetry and poetics. He won the American Poetry Review/ Honickman Award in 2003 for his collection "Evidences," selected by the poet Jorie Graham.  Additionally, he has received the Sarah Lawrence's Campbell Corner Poetry Award and fellowships from the Ingram Merrill Foundation and the National Foundation for the Arts.  His poems have appeared in numerous publications, including: The American Poetry Review, Boulevard, Crazyhorse, Conduit, Fence, The Harvard Review, The Kenyon Review, Ploughshares and Web-Conjunctions.

During the event, McCorkle will read from "Evidences," as well as from recently published work. It will take place in the reading room of the Geneva Public Library, located at the corner of South Main and Castle Streets, on Friday, September 9, beginning at 7:15 p.m.  The reading will last approximately an hour, followed by a question and answer period.

McCorkle holds the M.F.A. from the Iowa Writer's Workshop and the Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
