Posted on Friday, September 02, 2011

The 2011 Trias Writer-in-Residence Tom Piazza will be giving the kick-off reading for the academic year. Recently featured on NPR, Piazza, a writer for the HBO series "Treme" and a novelist of post-Katrina New Orleans, will read from a selection of his works at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22 in Albright Auditorium.

The first in the Trias Residency Reading Series, Piazza will share his thoughtful examinations of the life, culture in the heart of New Orleans. From its music to its food and its people, Piazza paints the city - both before and after Hurricane Katrina - in vivid detail. In his reading, Piazza will bring his work and world to life, paving the way for other authors in the reading series throughout the semester.

The next author to participate in the Trias Residency Reading Series is Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and PEN/Faulkner  nominee Mary Gaitskill, who will join the HWS campus on Thursday, Oct. 20.

A well known music writer, Piazza won a 2004 Grammy Award for his album notes to "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: A Musical Journey" and is a three-time winner of the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for Music Writing. Musician Bob Dylan has said, "Tom Piazza's writing pulsates with nervous electrical tension - reveals the emotions that we can't define."

Piazza's work has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Bookforum, The Oxford American, Columbia Journalism Review, and many other periodicals. Piazza's novel "City Of Refuge" won the 2008 Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction. His other books include the post-Katrina classic "Why New Orleans Matters," the Faulkner Society Award-winning novel "My Cold War," and the short-story collection "Blues and Trouble," which won the James Michener Award for Fiction. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
