Forbes Ranks HWS Top 100

Posted on Thursday, August 18, 2011

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are among the best 100 schools in the nation, according to Forbes magazine. The publication listed HWS as 87th in "America's Top Colleges," its annual ranking of the 650 best undergraduate institutions. In the list, Hobart and William Smith were listed as 78th in the category of private colleges, and 41 in the list of best colleges in the Northeast.

Forbes' rankings of 650 schools represent the top 20 percent of all undergraduate institutions. The list is prepared exclusively for Forbes by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP), a Washington D.C. think tank.  Last year, the Colleges were ranked 140 overall.

In introducing the list, Forbes writer Michael Noer explains, "Our annual ranking of the 650 best undergraduate institutions focuses on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt."

This is one of several recent national accolades. Also this month, the Princeton Review again included Hobart and William Smith as among the country's best institutions for undergraduate education in its 2012 edition of its annual college guide, "The Best 376 Colleges." Last year, Hobart and William Smith were named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. In recent years, Hobart and William Smith have also been listed in The Princeton Review's "Colleges with a Conscience: An Engaged Student's Guide to College," which ranked HWS as one of best institutions for service learning and civic engagement.
