Innovative, young choreographer and artistic director Monica Bill Barnes and her company of dancers will present their award-winning show, "Everything is Getting Better all the Time (in 3 Acts)," on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Winn-Seeley Gym-Theater.
Monica Bill Barnes & Company is a contemporary American dance company directed by renowned choreographer Monica Bill Barnes. The troop gives regular performances in New York, and tours throughout the country accepting teaching opportunities and artistic residencies. With only four dancers, the company is known for its intimate performances that celebrate individuality and expose the theatricality of everyday life.
"The Monica Bill Barnes & Company is really relevant and fresh in the dance world today. As an artistic director, Barnes is extremely articulate and innovative and her work is also interdisciplinary in nature," says Associate Professor of Dance Cadence Whittier. "I think that theater students will find her work moving; she uses themes that are very American, which will interest students studying history or women's studies. The company uses both comedy and tragedy; the humor can draw an audience in, I think, and before they realize it, something profound and thought provoking is happening."
Tickets for the Sept. 14 performance are $5 and available at the door. For more information, call 315-781-3949. Barnes will also teach guest classes Monday, Sept. 12 through Wednesday, Sept. 14. Each class will be geared toward intermediate-level dancers and higher, with focuses ranging from performance quality to dance composition. All classes will be held in the Winn-Seeley Dance Studio. To reserve a spot, call 315-781-3949 or e-mail email@example.com.
This residency is sponsored by the HWS Dance Department and is also funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts. NDP is supported by lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, with additional funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Community Connections Fund of the MetLife Foundation, and the Boeing Company Charitable Trust.
