Colleges Work to Aid Japan

Posted on Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Although the HWS campus is on Spring Break, efforts to aid the victims of the horrific events in Japan have already begun. President of the Caribbean Student Association Gabrielle Perez '11 is hard at work organizing the Pray for Japan Fundraiser that will commence once students return to campus next week.

The tsunami and magnitude 8.9 earthquake that hit Japan last week continues to devastate the island nation. Thousands are dead and thousands more missing, entire villages have been flattened, and threats of nuclear meltdown are ever-present.

Starting Monday, March 21, during the lunch hours, Perez and her classmates will table in the Scandling Campus Center, seeking donations for the shattered nation. After the success of the Hope for Haiti campaign, Perez hopes that all students, staff and faculty will stop by to donate.

"This is such a devastating event. I feel as a country we need to come together to help," explains Perez. "Without help, how will they begin to rebuild their country?"

Efforts have also been extended to raise money during the "Reggae vs. Reggaeton Party" that will be hosted by the Latin American Organization and the Caribbean Student Association on Saturday, March 26 (11 p.m. - 2:30 a.m.) in the Barn. LAO and CSA members will table throughout the night, asking party-goers to make a $1 - $2 donation to aid relief efforts. Perez said such efforts proved extremely helpful during the Haiti campaign, thanks to the generosity of her classmates.

Perez urges all to participate. "What if this happened here? We would want others to help us," says Perez. "When you give your time and service, all benefit."
