Higgins '93 named Trinity Coach

Posted on Friday, December 31, 2010

Michael Higgins '93, a former All-American lacrosse player for the Statesman, has been appointed head men's lacrosse coach for Trinity College.  Prior to his new position, Higgins served as the head coach at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass., and acted as defensive coordinator at Tufts University for 5 years.

"Michael Higgins has had championship experience as a player at Hobart, and as a coach in the recent success at Tufts," says Trinity Athletic Director Michael Renwick. "More importantly, Coach Higgins has a passion for teaching and developing the overall student-athlete through the sport of lacrosse. He accomplishes this through a work ethic that professes the importance of academics, values, discipline and respect. He will be a great addition to our faculty, our department and the campus community."

In 2003, and again from 2005 to 2008, Higgins acted as defensive coordinator at Tufts.  During his tenure there, he coached nine All-NESCAC selections and two All-Americans.  Under Higgins' guidance, the Jumbos gained a five season record of 54-26, and led the team to the NCAA Division III Championship Second Round in 2007. Since 2007, Higgins has served as the director of operations for the Catz Sports Performance Center.

"I am extremely excited for the opportunity," says Higgins.  "It has always been a dream of mine to get back to the NESCAC, and I am excited to work with Trinity's fine student-athletes."

Higgins graduated from Hobart College in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in American studies and a minor in economics. Higgins went on to receive a master's degree from the University of San Francisco in sports management.  During his time with the Statesmen, he was a member of three NCAA Division III National Champion squads (1990, 1991, 1993), a team captain and an All-American defender.

The Trinity College men's lacrosse team finished with a 9-7 record last spring, and were nationally ranked in 2009.
