Investigating Electrons, Career Pathways

Deepak Vallabhaneni '13 is currently conducting biochemistry research with Dr. Edward Berry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. The rising sophomore plans to major in biochemistry with a possible minor is health professions in preparation for medical school. He would like to become a physician, but is also interested in conducting medical research.
Through his work at Upstate Medical University, he hopes to gain research experience that will prepare him for further studies and inform him on whether or not research is a likely career possibility.
Berry, who Vallabhaneni met through ties at HWS, studies oxidative phosphorylation and the structural biology of membrane proteins using X-ray crystallography. Through the internship, Vallabhaneni will study electron transfer pathways in the presence of certain inhibitors.
"The connections between laboratory work and lecture at HWS have provided me with a better understanding of what goes on in the lab and have also provided me with a foundation for beginning research," he says.
