From all over the country, Hobart alumni and William Smith alumnae are converging on Reunion 2010 Headquarters in the L. Thomas Melly Academic Center atrium.
"I used to see all these old people coming through, and now I'm one of them," said Bill Persell '65, laughing. Persell, with his wife Nancy, returned to campus from Cleveland, Ohio to celebrate his 45th Reunion.
"We see a lot of friends from the Colleges regularly," he said, "but it's great to see the ones I haven't in a while."
At the check-in atrium, returning alums are determining which of their classmates have arrived, sharing coffee, signing up for weekend activities and registering for social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, so they can keep in touch with friends in the stretch of months between Reunions.
"Oh, I'm following Hobart and William Smith on Twitter," said one William Smith alum, enthusiastically.
After registering, Reunion attendees are reconnecting with old friends, assessing the water quality of Seneca Lake aboard the Colleges' floating research vessel and getting physical in the Tour de Finger Lakes bike tour and the "Walk on the Wild Side" hike through the Colleges' Henry W. Hanley nature preserve. With campus tours and Heritage of Trees tour running all day, alums are able to get reacquainted with their old stomping grounds and explore new facilities.
"For many, this is a chance to reengage with classmates and others and to get a sense of HWS today," said President Mark D. Gearan.
Day-one events like admissions workshops and panels on HWS Athletics and U.S. healthcare gave insight into issues from the campus level to the national -- with more events, like the Alumni College Sessions and open houses at specialized HWS offices like the Salisbury Center for Career Services.
"Events like the healthcare symposium are an excellent addition to the program," said former HWS Trustee Barbara Tornow '65, also back to celebrate her 45th Reunion. "It's just delightful to be back."
