An Evening of Art

Posted on Thursday, June 03, 2010

Alums are invited to an evening of art and music at the newly expanded arts facilities from 9 p.m. to midnight on Friday, June 4, on the Houghton House grounds. An exhibit by Hobart alumnus Jonathan White '80, "The Colors of the Urban Landscape," will be featured in the Katherine D. Elliott Studio Arts Center.

White's work captures colors and iconic images of urban life. From Marilyn Monroe to Tide detergent, graphic design and photography combine to portray White's unique vision of city living. In some pieces, the bright hues of city bustle juxtapose the stoic grays of buildings. In others, architecture comes to life in vivid geometric shapes that resemble optical illusions.

"‘The Colors of the Urban Landscape,' had two starting points," White says of his work. "One was in June, 1989 when I visited Paris to attend my brother's wedding, the other starting point was in January, 1990; when unemployed, I decided to take a trip into Manhattan, and shoot a few rolls of film. The results were quite encouraging, so I kept coming back. Soon I had accumulated a large stockpile of images, and in a short time I was having art shows in galleries on Long Island. After that I moved on to some of the galleries in Manhattan."

Alums will also have the opportunity to tour the Goldstein Family Carriage House, as well as view the Davis Gallery, dedicated last year in honor of Clarence "Dave" Davis '48. The Gallery, located in Houghton House, currently houses artwork from the Colleges' collection.

"I think that when people see the renaissance going on at Houghton House and the additions of the Katherine D. Elliott Studio Arts Building and the Goldstein Carriage House, they'll want to get involved," Davis has said. "The more people who are interested in the project, the sooner we'll have something really worthwhile."

Musicians Bob Masteller '60 and Steve Venuti '71 will add to the artistic mood with the sounds of jazz, and a cash bar will be available.
