Posted on Friday, November 20, 2009

Since graduation, Johanna Murphy '08 has been working at Power Loft LLC, a commercial real estate company in McLean, Va., that specializes in the development and ownership of data centers. As the marketing coordinator, Murphy is responsible for managing Power Loft's image and press, and was recently a part of the team to receive a green award on behalf the company.

On Monday, Nov. 16, Power Loft LLC was awarded with the first annual Green Award by the Northern Virginia Tech Council at their annual banquet. The NVTC Green Award is designed to honor area technology companies, universities, and organizations that are making an impact in the greater Washington D.C. area through top-notch green practices. Power Loft specializes in the development and operation of high-density, high security data centers, the first of which is located in Innovation Park, Prince William County, Va.

Power Loft's data centers provide a 72 percent efficiency improvement over traditional data centers, Murphy says.

"I feel fortunate to be working for an environmentally conscious company and I am grateful for my Hobart and William smith education for giving me the tools I need to be in a position to make the world a greener place," says Murphy, noting that she is the first woman to work at Power Loft LLC.

At William Smith, Murphy majored in American studies with a concentration in sexual minorities in America and minored in women studies and history. She played soccer for the Herons for three years, and also raced with the Hobart ski team.

The picture above was taken at the annual banquet and is of all six of the Power Loft employees.  In the center, President and CEO James F. Coakley P'08 (whose daughter Alice attended William Smith) is holding the award, along with representation from Iron Point Partners, Clark Construction, HP Mission Critical Facilities, and Millennium Realty.
