Ever since he was a child, Myles Hunt '11 has loved the Muppets. His whole life, he has been interested in creating and performing these puppets for family audiences, so his internship with the Jim Henson Company, in New York City, was a dream come true.
"What I have learned working with the Jim Henson Company is the value and effort creativity holds in such an imaginative business," says Hunt, and arts and education major. "To teach children through art and laughter is one of the best ways to get through to young minds. After being an avid watcher and appreciative fan of Jim Henson's works, I am proud to have been able to work in bringing the magic to families and see the process."
Although Hunt's title may have been "intern," his work was not limited by his position. Hunt's work included building and sewing Muppet body parts, specifically Muppet feet, and organizing feathers and props for the international Sesame Street characters. Hunt also worked as a shopper, Muppet transporter, and arm rod builder for various projects going on throughout New York City.
Additionally, Hunt worked as an assistant on the Sesame Street set of a special program titled, "Families Stand Together: Feeling Secure in Tough Times," which aired on Sept. 9. "It was inspiring to be able to work alongside the crew and Muppeteers to see how the whole filming experience is created," Hunt says.
Hunt is currently spending the fall semester abroad in New Zealand, where he is studying at the University of Auckland. While abroad, Hunt is also working in an elementary school through the HWS Education Program and studying local puppetry with help from the HWS Seay Grant. Established by Hobart alum, the late George Liston Seay '62, the Seay Grant provides students the opportunity to undertake projects abroad that build upon their own interests or that augment their existing course of study.
While looking towards the future, Hunt hopes "To create my own studio and characters to make people laugh and learn."
On campus, Hunt is a member of the Club Track and Field Team and participates in Geneva Heroes.
