Masteller '60 on Radio Friday
Posted on Thursday, June 04, 2009
On Friday, June 5, Bob Masteller '60 kicked off reunion weekend on the radio - talking about the Jazz Festival he'll bring back to campus later in the month. Ted Baker of the Finger Lakes Radio Group interviewed Masteller about the Jazz Festival live at 7:50 a.m. The interview will air on 1240 WGVA, 1590/98.1 WAUB and Finger Lakes News Radio 104.5/1550 WCGR.
Masteller will return to campus with his jazz band from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14. Masteller, master of the trumpet, the cornet, and the fluegelbone will be accompanied by vocalist Tish Oney (a former vocal instructor at the Colleges), Brian Murphy on the vibraphone, Dave Solazzo on the piano, Bill Kahl on the bass, and Joel Carberry on the drums.
This year, Jazz lovers will also experience a new event. Rev. Lesley Adams has been working with Bob Masteller to incorporate some of his music into the Sunday morning mass to create a "Jazz Mass." The Jazz Mass is an optional event that will take place from 10- 11 a.m. and will be followed by the Sunday Brunch.
After graduating from Hobart College, Masteller went on to attend the Simon Graduate School of Business, working most of his life as a business executive who always kept a deep interest in music. He continued to practice jazz - playing the trumpet, valve trombone and vibraphone and leading his own groups in clubs throughout the "low country" of South Carolina and Georgia. Masteller has performed for Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and Sen. Fritz Hollings from South Carolina.
As a former Senior Vice President of The Sea Pines Company, a resort in Hilton Head, S.C., Masteller has succeeded in combining his knack for business with his creative side. He is now the owner of The Jazz Corner, a highly-rated jazz club and gourmet restaurant located in Hilton Head that features performances by such noted artists as George Shearing, Bucky Pizzarelli and Terry Gibbs.
The Jazz Festival will take place at the Scandling Campus Center, located on the Hobart and William Smith campus. Tickets for Friday night (5 - 9 p.m. entertainment with hors d'oeuvres) are $15 and Saturday (1-6 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres) are $25. Tickets for both Friday and Saturday are $35.
