Since kicking their fundraising into gear this fall, the Stewardson Society has fostered a strong sense of commitment and generosity among HWS students. Co-chaired by Zachary Alton '09 and Katie Baker '09, the Stewardson Society has concluded a successful year that was filled with social fundraising events and the highly successful "Dorm Storm." The year ended with the majority of seniors making a contribution of $20.09 - their class year - to The Fund for Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
"We're very happy to say that 56 percent of seniors - 238 members of the Classes of 2009 - have donated," says Director of Annual Giving Kristen Einstein. As in past years, the Chair of the Board of the Trustees David H. Deming '75, has agreed to match every senior donation dollar-for-dollar.
The Stewardson Society joined President Mark D. Gearan and HWS seniors on Thursday morning in the café of the Scandling Campus Center for a brunch in celebration of Senior Week.
"This year's Stewardson Society has done an extraordinary job of getting the word out about participation," says President Gearan. "Our students are mindful of giving back, which is a great testament to their experiences here. We're grateful for the initiative and generosity of these students and of our Board of Trustees. It's very exciting to see their hard work and dedication pay off."
So far, the Stewardson Society has raised more than $6,000. "We are so pleased with our students' efforts, and many have already pledged for the next three years. What a way to give back!" applauds Einstein.
The Colleges' senior class giving initiative began in the late 1980s and was formally named The Stewardson Society during the 2006-2007 academic year. Each consecutive year since its inception, it has increased in number of dollars raised as well as in participation. Named for the first president of the coordinate Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the Stewardson Society immortalizes Reverend Langdon Stewardson's dedication in bringing Hobart and William Smith Colleges together.
