Honing a “Nac” for Public Speaking

Posted on Friday, August 01, 2008

Sarah Tompkins ’10 hopped on board with the F.X. Matt Brewing Company this summer as a Saranac Brewery tour guide in Utica, N.Y. Her duties are as varied and wide-ranging as the company’s products. Recently, Tompkins was a part of Boilermaker, America’s largest 15K road race. Saranac Brewery hosted an after-party for all Boilermaker contestants and their families. “We provided music and beer, and vendors sold all sorts of food,” says Tompkins. “Over 30,000 people came out to enjoy the festivities, and I was able to present the winners of the race with flowers.” Though Tompkins enjoys the Brewery’s special events such as Boilermaker and their concert series, her favorite part of the job is giving tours. “You have to be very enthusiastic in order to keep up the energy for first-timers,” explains Tompkins, “but it’s worth it to meet such interesting people all the time and to learn new things from them.” As an English major and Russian area studies minor, Tompkins uses the communications skills she learned at HWS every day on the job. “Class presentations taught me how to remain cool and confident while speaking in front of people,” says Tompkins, “and my job at the Brewery has further improved my public speaking skills.” Tompkins will often meet HWS alums and fellow students on her tours. In fact, Vice President of F. X. Matt Brewing Company’s Marketing and Sales, Fred Matt ’81, is a Hobart alumnus. “On my first tour, I met two Hobart alums, and it was great. We had a lot to talk about and it made the atmosphere so much more relaxed,” she says. “The best part about this job is the people. They make me look forward to coming in to work" says Tompkins.
