Hughes finishes 2nd in U23 World Championship

Posted on Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Former William Smith College rower Libby Hughes '14 competed for the first time as a post-graduate rower today. Stroking the Vesper Boat Club's U23 Lightweight 4x, Hughes and her teammates finished second out of four, behind California Boat Club in the World Championship trials on Mercer Lake in Princeton, N.J.

Vesper trailed the leader the entire race. At the 1000 meter mark, they made a rallying move which put them within a deck but then bobbled and lost a little more ground. California Boat Club crossed the finish line in 6:59.57 with Vesper behind them in 7:05.24.

"The amount of time the camp boats have to prepare for Trials is short and challenging," said William Smith Head Coach Sandra Chu. "I think the Vesper coaches did a great job identifying which athletes had the speed and then finding the right combination of people for the quad.  The boat and coaches have a lot to be proud of. California raced a fantastic race and they will have a great race at Worlds."

Hughes will continue to train at Vesper for the remainder of the summer racing at Club Nationals (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), the Independence Day Regatta (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Canadian Henley (St. Catharine's, Ontario, Canada).

At William Smith, Hughes was a four-time member of the NCAA travel squad, earning bronze in the varsity eight in 2013. This year she was a part of the Heron varsity eight that won the petite final at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships. Hughes also won gold at the Liberty League Championship and the New York State Championships and won the petite final at the ECAC NIRC. She was also a member of the 2014 Liberty League Crew of the Year. In 2013, Hughes placed third overall in theU23 Lightweight 1x Trials.
