Dector '15 Part of ABC Campus Crew

Selected as one of just 16 Campus Crew representatives to work for ABC this fall, Blair Dector '15 is bringing screenings of sneak previews of the network's newest TV shows to campus throughout the semester. In her Campus Crew role, which follows a recent summer internship with ABC studios in California, Dector is responsible for handling all aspects of the screenings program on campus, managing everything from social media initiatives to organizing several events.
"For me, the Campus Crew experience is a huge opportunity to focus on social media, marketing, public relations and research, while also being able to give members of the campus community a preview of upcoming TV shows and getting a ‘behind the scenes' look," Dector says. "The screenings are open to everyone at HWS, whether you're a student, faculty or staff."
Recently, Dector hosted the first screening event, a preview of Rebel Wilson's new comedy series, "Super Fun Night." The screening offered students the opportunity to get a sneak-peak of the show almost three weeks before its Oct. 3 premiere on ABC. Free giveaways of "swag" items sent to Dector from ABC were also given out to students at the screening. Dector will be organizing screening events similar to this one for the HWS community throughout the semester.
"This kind of screening program is a great opportunity for the campus," says Professor of Media and Society Les Friedman, who is Dector's academic adviser. "It gives students the chance to see a pilot television program before it airs and allows them to give feedback that can be taken into consideration as part of the creation and production of the show."
While ABC representatives give Dector a suggested date range of when to hold the screening for each show, she is ultimately responsible for choosing a time and date that is most convenient for HWS students in order to maximize attendance. She's also tasked with finding the best screening venue, which must be free of charge as no funding is given to Dector to run the events.
Responsible for all promotional and social media aspects of the screenings, Dector will also be fostering her marketing skills as a Campus Crew representative. Part of her duties consist of creating and updating an ABC Campus Crew Facebook page, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter feed specifically for HWS. To get the word out, Dector will use these platforms to inform students of the latest screening information, in addition to posting flyers, sending e-mails, and advertising in The Herald and on WEOS.
Currently, Dector is running a scavenger hunt using Instagram through Oct. 10. Clues will be in prominent campus buildings like Stern, Demarest, Warren Hunting Smith Library, Scandling Campus Center and Coxe Hall, among others.
"Be on the lookout for an exclusive live screening of the American Music Awards in November," adds Dector. "Details to come on the Facebook page ABC Campus Crew at Hobart and William Smith Colleges."
