The William Smith College golf team weathered a challenging fall weekend at Clifton Springs Country Club to finish second in the William Smith Invitational. With the top two finishers in the field, Division II Le Moyne took home the team title.
Saturday's opening round was shortened to just nine holes due to rain. Sunday saw the whole field get in 18 holes on a brisk first day of fall. For the third time in her brief Heron career, first-year Madeline Dietz paced the Herons. She tied for sixth place out of 39 golfers. Dietz carded a 13 over 49 on Saturday and logged a 20 over 92 on Sunday. Senior Lisa Vialle (t16, 50-109), junior Grace Fiacre (t16, 57-102), and junior Maddie Carens (18th, 53-107) completed William Smith's team score.
Competing as individuals, first-year Whitney Reynolds and senior Brynna Trumpetto also placed in the top 20 for the Herons. Reynolds shot a 47 and a 98 to place ninth. Her Sunday score is her best collegiate 18-hole effort. Trumpetto finished in 14th place, turning in scores of 53 and 100.
The Dolphins were led by Emily Stickel and Kayla Burt. Stickel trailed Burt by two strokes after Saturday's nine holes, but carded Sunday's low round, an 88, on Sunday to top her teammate by two strokes. Nazareth's Meaghan Porter (45-91) and Ithaca's Taylor Reeves (46-90) tied for third place.
Le Moyne was well clear of the field with a team score of 560 for the weekend. William Smith (619) was 20 strokes ahead of third place St. John Fisher and Elmira completed the four team field at 645. Individual golfers from Keuka, Nazareth, SUNY Delhi also competed at Clifton Springs Country Club this weekend.
The Herons are back in action next weekend when they compete in the 36-hole Martin/Wallace Invitational hosted by SUNY Cortland.
