This summer, Grace Hedges '14 headed to New York for her second internship with NBCUniversal, this time as a public relations intern with NBC News Communications. Hedges interned for "Dateline NBC" last summer and had what she calls "a great experience working in the investigative unit." She received credit as an assistant producer for the airing of the "Wild, Wild Web" segment.
"It was because of my experience at 'Dateline' that I decided to explore another area of NBCUniversal and was fortunate enough to be chosen as a public relations intern," says Hedges, a double major in writing and rhetoric and media and society, with a strong interest in media and journalism.
Both internships gave Hedges experience in her chosen field. She describes her daily responsibilities as "compiling news clips to be sent out to the PR team, formatting press lists, attending daily PR team meetings, and assembling round-ups of daily news clips." She adds, "Essentially, I helped to keep the PR department aware of media publicity involving NBC News."
Hedges knows she wants to stay within the media industry following graduation and hopes to continue with NBCUniversal.
In the meantime, she is studying abroad this fall with the Rome Travel Writing and Arts Program, led by her adviser, Professor of Writing and Rhetoric Cheryl Forbes. Hedges previously took Forbes' travel writing class, "Going Places," and is looking forward to the opportunity to use her skills in that area.
"Rome is such an exciting city with its blend of history, architecture, food, and religion, and I am excited to take courses that will expose me to these areas," she says.
Hedges is from Easton, Conn., and has been a member of the William Smith swimming and diving team for three years.
