The William Smith soccer team will begin the 2013 season ranked No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of American/Continental Tire NCAA Division III preseason rankings. The Herons finished last season with a 14-2-4 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
William Smith captured its sixth straight Liberty League title with a 3-2 victory over Union last fall. Going back to the 2007 season, the Herons are 99-12-17, including a 36-1-6 mark in Liberty League play. William Smith has made six straight appearances in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship, reaching the national semifinals three times.
The Herons, who graduated four seniors from the 2012 roster, will return three out of their top five scorers including last year's top goal scorer and All-Liberty League first team selection, junior Madeline Buckley (10). Also returning is senior goalie Chelsea Dunay who led the conference with a 0.53 goals against average and 10 shutouts in 2012.
In 33 seasons, Head Coach Aliceann Wilber has logged a 457-124-54 (.762) overall record. She has earned more wins than any other coach in NCAA Division III women's soccer.
William Smith will open the season at the 2013 TCNJ Classic. The Herons will take on the host Lions on Friday, Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m., and then play Stevens on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m.
