Farnsworth, Dunn Publish Article

Posted on Monday, March 12, 2012

Assistant Professor of Spanish and Hispanic Studies May Farnsworth and Associate Professor of Political Science Kevin Dunn co-wrote an article, "‘We ARE the Revolution': Riot Grrrl Press, Girl Empowerment and DIY Self-Publishing," which has been published in the most recent issue of the journal, Women's Studies 41(2).

The article looks at the Riot Grrrl movement, which was developed in the 1990s by young women challenging the sexism of North American punk scenes. Aimed at corrected mainstream media's misrepresentations of the movement, the article focuses on the movement's musical production, noting that the punk bands were only one aspect of the movement. Farnsworth and Dunn argue that, at its core, the movement was committed to girl empowerment and self-representation - principles that the movement worked toward by creating alternative media and do-it-yourself self-publishing.

Farnsworth joined the faculty in 2007. She earned her B.A. from The Evergreen State College, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Spanish American Lterature from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her most recent publications include: "Sex Work, Sickness, and Suicide: Early Feminist Theatre in Argentina" in the trilingual online journal e-misferica, "‘La Eva mexicana': in Post-Revolutionary Mexican Theatre" in the South Atlantic Review, and four biographical sketches for the Encyclopedia of Modern Drama.

Dunn received his Ph.D. from Boston University, M.A. from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia and B.A. from Davidson College. Before joining the HWS faculty in 2001, he taught at Hartwick College, Boston University, Boston College, St. Anselm College, Tufts University and Appalachian State University.

He is author of "Imaging the Congo: Identity and International Relations" and co-editor of "Africa's Challenge to International Relations Theory," "Identity and Global Politics," and "African Guerrillas: Raging Against the Machine."
