Wednesday, October 9

  • Morning Arrival in Rome, transfer from airport by van and hotel check in
  • 12:00 p.m. Stroll to Gustolab for welcome and light lunch buffet
  • Back to hotel for rest
  • 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Open-top bus tour for an orientation to Rome
  • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Group aperitivo and dinner
  • 8:00 p.m. Group stroll to Pantheon area and Trevi Fountain

The Colosseum

Day 2:

Thursday, October 10

  • 9:00 a.m. Leave hotel and walk or take public transport to the Forum area
  • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Tour of the Forum and Colosseum with guide
  • 12:30 p.m. Group light lunch (local foods) in Monti area (near Colosseum)
  • Free time
  • 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Lecture at Gustolab: “Food and Art” – with HWS fall students
  • 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Group thematic dinner: Food and Art - with HWS fall students

Wine tasting

Day 3:

Friday, October 11

  • 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. Walk from hotel to tour Campo de Fiori market and to see Baroque art in nearby churches of S. Luigi dei Francesi and S. Agostino and fountains in Piazza Navona
  • Free time
  • 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. Visit to an art and antiques gallery for a demonstration of art restoration
  • 4:30 p.m. Group wine tasting
  • Rest of evening free

Galleria Borghese

Day 4:

Saturday, October 12

  • 9:00 a.m. Leave hotel and take public transportation to Via Veneto for walking tour to Galleria Borghese Museum
  • 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Galleria Borghese Museum
  • Afternoon free
  • 5:00 p.m. In hotel: literature discussion (short stories on Rome, assigned in advance)
  • 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Short cooking class and group dinner

Sant Ivo Church

Day 5:

Sunday, October 13

  • 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Walk from hotel to nearby churches, including Sant’ Ivo (to see Borromini’s masterpiece), S. Andrea della Valle and the Gesu
  • Free time
  • 1:00 p.m. Leave hotel and take public transport to group lunch - a traditional Sunday affair – at Lo Scarpone on Janiculum Hill, near Doria Pamphili Park
  • Post-prandial stroll in local park or Janiculum Hill down to Trastevere
  • Evening free

Day 6:

Monday, October 14

  • 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Leave hotel and take public transport from hotel to St. Peter’s and Vatican Museums (see Sistine Chapel)
  • Afternoon free
  • 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Ancient Rome group dinner

Day 7:

Tuesday, October 15

  • 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Slow Food farm visit - learn about cheese-making and have group lunch
  • Free time
  • 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Walking tour to Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo areas
  • Evening and dinner free

Jewish Ghetto

Day 8:

Wednesday, October 16

  • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Walking tour of Campo de Fiori area and Jewish Ghetto. Visit to Jewish Museum and have guided tour of the Great Synagogue and the Spanish Synagogue
  • 12:15 p.m. Group lunch in Jewish Ghetto in typical Jewish-Roman restaurant
  • Early-mid afternoon free
  • 4:30 p.m. Meet group at Piazza Farnese for a 5:00 p.m. tour in English of the Palazzo Farnese
  • Evening and dinner free

Eating outdoors

Day 9:

Thursday, October 17

  • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Leave hotel and take public transport to Quirinal Hill area for walking tour to see Borromini’s San Carlino and Bernini’s Ecstasy of St. Teresa in S. Maria della Vittoria
  • Afternoon free
  • 8:00 p.m. Farewell group dinner

Day 10:

Friday, October 18

  • Time to be announced - Van transport to airport for flight home
