In his January State of the Colleges’ address, an exuberant President Mark D. Gearan announced that Hobart and William Smith reached the $100 million mark in Campaign for the Colleges.
“This is an extraordinary accomplishment,” Gearan said. “Meeting this milestone so early in the course of the campaign signals that we will reach our objective – to enrich the academic community through enhancements to scholarship, research and facilities.”
The campaign, which has already begun to transform campus through the creation of new facilities and an enhanced endowment, seeks to raise $160 million. “The most ambitious fundraising effort in our history is vigorously under way,” Gearan said.
In total, more than 16,000 alumni, alumnae, friends, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations have already made Hobart and William Smith a philanthropic priority.
David Deming ’75, chair of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Board of Trustees, credits the support of the entire campus community with realizing this landmark level of giving. “Because this is an exceptional institution with remarkable teachers, scholars and students, we’ve been able to make a clear case to donors that Hobart and William Smith is a place ready to move to a new level of excellence.”
