Uspallata
May 26, 2013 - June 5, 2013
(9 nights and 10 days)

Richard Salter is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Hobart and William Smith, where he has been teaching since 1998. He is also a 1986 graduate of Hobart, where he studied political science. Following graduation Richard spent two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the small Caribbean island of Dominica, where he also returned later for his graduate field work on the formation of Catholic, Pentecostal and Rastafarian groups. Richard's academic specialty is the Christian tradition, which he approaches with a mix of sociological, anthropological and theological methods. A firm believer in hands-on global education and intercultural immersion, Richard developed the semester-long Mendoza, Argentina program and led it in 2008, 2010, and 2012. On this trip, Richard will provide background on Argentine history and the group will explore food and wine as a way of approaching Argentine culture.

Mendoza
Argentina has long been known for its capital, Buenos Aires, home to colorful neighborhoods, melancholy tangos, soccer fanatics and grand personalities like Evita. But that is only part of the country. Our tour will explore a different Argentina - an Argentina of clear skies, gauchos, and snow-capped mountains - while we sip mate, eat empanadas and asados, take siestas and sample Malbec and Torrontes, Argentina’s famous red and white wine varieties.
Join us as we explore Mendoza - Argentina’s wine capital, gateway to the Andes, and growing center of bodega architecture and gastronomy. We will start in the city itself, with bus and walking tours that highlight important historical landmarks (such as Gen. San Martín’s crossing of the Andes) and the geology of the zone (where Pacific and South American tectonic plates meet and unfold 250 million years of history). There will also be time to explore the downtown, enjoy café life, visit museums and parks, and browse the artisans’ booths in Plaza Independencia. And, of course, there is tango in Mendoza and we will attend a performance.

Mendoza Vineyard
In addition we will walk in Aconcagua Provincial Park (the base of the tallest mountain in the Americas), visit Puente del Inca (the farthest point south of the Incan Empire), and stay for a night in the Tupungato Valley (home of some of the best known bodegas in the country). We’ll visit an olive orchard and sample olive varieties and oils, and we will tour a range of local wineries. Our main meals will be at bodegas that specialize in multi-stage wine and fine food pairings and Argentine specialties like the traditional asado (barbecue). We’ll also spend a couple of hours horseback riding in the mountains, and in the evenings we’ll relax with talks and discussions on architecture, wine and other aspects of Argentine culture.
Come and experience a different Argentina through the terroir of the Andes and the cuisine of Argentina’s multi-ethnic heritage!

Mendoza is located at the foot of the Andes Mountains. These mountains greatly influence the weather and climate of this wine-growing region. As a result, the weather in Mendoza is very mild and dry, with most of the rainfall in December - March. June has the lowest rainfall of the year. The overall climate of Mendoza is quite similar to the climate in California.
The fresh breezes, bright sunshine and clear skies of the Andes Mountains are very pleasant, but it is important to realize that there are large differences in altitudes and temperatures across the province. Because of these variations, warm clothes are recommended anytime when visiting the region.
