Reunion 2014 Fundraising

It’s Your Reunion: Come Back, Give Back

One of the key components to Hobart and William Smith reunions is the Reunion Class Gift. During the four years preceding a milestone reunion (5 years, 10 years etc,), and during the reunion year itself, classes make a special effort to raise funds and increase class participation. This is one way classes can support the Colleges in honor of their reunion. The highlight of a special reunion is an event when reunion classes report their percentage of participation and present President Gearan with a check for their class gift. All gifts for a class Reunion will be considered in support of The Annual Fund.

The volunteers for each alumni and alumnae class set three fundraising goals and work with their classmates to achieve them:

Participation:
The number of classmates who contribute a gift to the Colleges during their reunion year results in a percentage of participation that should be significantly higher than in non-reunion years.

Class Gift:
The class gift is composed of the cumulative amount of money received by the Colleges during the five years leading to reunion weekend. For example, after a class celebrates a five-year reunion volunteers begin to build a class gift for their next 10 year reunion.

Single Year Achievement:
This goal is the amount of money the class raises during the year building up to their reunion weekend. Alumni and alumnae understand that it is important to increase their giving during a reunion year and this dollar amount often drives the class gift and determines its success.

Come Back, Give Back

Your Reunion is a time to become reacquainted with the Colleges, to renew friendships and to celebrate the HWS experience. Mark your calendars for a weekend filled with campus tours, class receptions and dinners, mini-college classes, the traditional Quad Celebration, and everything in between! As you make plans to return, we hope you'll consider how your Reunion gift can help make the Hobart and William Smith experience as unique and meaningful for today's students as it was for you.

How much should I give?

Everyone will be encouraged to participate in their Reunion Class gift. Levels of support vary from class to class and person to person, but your class volunteers will likely ask for a "stretch" gift from everyone in the class.

Every gift is important to HWS. Just as important as the total amount a class raises, is the number of classmates who participate with a gift. Gifts of all sizes are welcome and count equally toward your class participation goal. If you think your $25 gift doesn't matter, think again! Last year, gifts at the $25 to $50 level added up to more than $75,000 for HWS. These gifts help to support everything from financial aid and student-faculty research, to student activities and study abroad. It's all about the collective impact. If you haven’t given in a few years, that’s okay - your reunion gift is a great way to start again!

What Counts?

  • Any gift made during your Reunion year (June 1 – May 31) will count toward your Reunion class gift.
  • We ask all alumni to contribute to the Colleges’ Annual Fund, allowing the HWS to use your gift where it is needed the most.
  • Alumni are also encouraged to consider planned giving (charitable gift annuities and bequests, for example) and outright capital gifts (gifts to endowment, special capital projects) in addition to their Annual Fund support.
  • All of these gifts count in the class gift total. For more information on the various types of giving vehicles, click here.

Making the Most of Your Reunion Gift

Recurring Gifts: To maximize the impact of your Reunion gift, consider pledging out over a five-year period and have the entire amount credited to your class*. For example, if you make a gift of $500 in your Reunion year and agree to do the same for the following four years, you and your class will receive credit for $2,500.

Recurring gift pledges are a win-win for all. You and your class receive special credit in honor of your Reunion milestone and HWS is able to count on your future commitments, saving mailing and printing costs.

Matching Gift Program: Matching gifts are another way to increase the impact of your gift. Many companies will match employee charitable contributions, in some cases doubling or tripling your gift. Visit the Colleges’ matching gift webpage, to determine if your company has a matching gift program.
