Presidential Scholarship for Inclusive Excellence

The Presidential Scholarship for Inclusive Excellence exists to recruit and enroll high achieving students with US residency from any racial background who have demonstrated leadership, activism, commitments to, and appreciation for diversity as it relates to race or ethnicity, gender or sexual identity, disabilities, and under-represented faith traditions. Applicants should display an on-going practice of examining beliefs and values of diversity, embrace work within and across differences, and aligning these passions with purpose. Students of Black, Asian, Hispanic/Latino/a, Native American or Pacific Islander heritage, students who identify as LGBTQ+, students who are members of under-represented faith traditions in US Colleges and students with disabilities are welcome to apply for the Presidential Scholarship on the basis of their leadership, service or demonstrated activism.

Students who wish to compete for a Presidential Scholarship must meet the following requirements by November 15 if applying as an Early Decision Candidate or January 15 if applying as an Early Decision II or Regular Decision Candidate:

  • Apply to Hobart and William Smith Colleges using the Common Application
  • Submit the HWS Scholarship Application
  • Complete an Admissions Interview
  • Satisfy at least one of the following academic criteria: top 10% of their high school class, 90 GPA or 3.5 equivalent in a college prep program, 28 ACT or 1300 SAT or receive a special recommendation from a school official. Note: Submission of test scores is required.
  • Submit an essay that addresses the following prompt: Reflect on your demonstrated leadership, commitment, and activism for racial and ethnic diversity, or other areas of diversity as identified, and how you intend to engage in the HWS community.

Presidential Scholarship Specifics:

  • $35,000 annual scholarship
  • Recipients must meet satisfactory academic progress, uphold community standards and maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA after the completion of two semesters at HWS.
  • Presidential Scholars will also meet once per semester as a cohort to build community and discuss critical issues on campus and serve as representatives of Inclusive Excellence.
