Pi Sigma Alpha

PSA Dinner

Members of the Department and 2014 Initiates of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national Political Science Honor Society. HWS has had the Chi Phi chapter since 1999 and initiated over 100 members.

Shane Simon was the guest speaker at the 2014
induction dinner.

Pi Sigma Alpha is the national Political Science Honor Society. It has chapters in approved colleges and universities. Hobart and William Smith applied to start a local chapter and our request was granted in 1999. Professor Iva E. Deutchman is the advisor of the Chi Phi (HWS) chapter and has been since its inception.

Each spring we induct those political science majors who have made the academic cut. Those inducted in their junior year must have a 3.7 grade point average, both in political science and overall, while the gpa for senior inductees is 3.5. National rules require that inducted students have had six political science classes. In 2014 we inducted four juniors and three seniors.

In April of each year we host an induction dinner to celebrate our students’ achievements. This year, Shane Simon was the guest speaker. Shane is a 2010 Hobart graduate and himself a member of Pi Sigma Alpha. While at Hobart he also did an honors project in political science. Since graduating he attended Syracuse University law school and he is now an attorney in Syracuse, New York.
