Some colleges take the pre-packaged tour approach to European studies--you know, where you barely get a taste of one country before it's time to move on to the next. Not so at Hobart and William Smith. Our European studies program lets you linger a while, so you can absorb everything you can about the culture, language, history, and overall philosophy of the nations you study.

Our success in providing so much begins and ends with the Colleges' interdisciplinary approach. Because we cull pertinent classes from several different departments, we are able to provide comprehensive coverage of the European theatre. The program offers eight distinct areas of concentration, focusing on specific regions, historical periods, and cultures. Core electives consider issues as varied as race, class, employment, economic policies, gender roles, and the arts. A language requirement completes the picture.

Students are strongly encouraged to further explore the culture, history, art, language, and people of a particular nation by participating in a semester abroad. The vast number of off-campus opportunities apropos of the program include Denmark, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, and Switzerland.

European studies is offered as a major and a minor.
