Explore: Choosing a major

Often times Hobart and William Smith students come in with the questions, “What should I major in?” and “what are my career options with this major?” The truth is, for most fields there aren't perfect majors. A liberal arts education will prepare you to pursue your career ambitions.

However, you want to choose a major that you will love, and Career Services can help with figuring out which career paths incorporate what you enjoy most in your academic studies.

Here are common concerns and questions that students have when exploring and deciding on a major:

  • I don’t know what I’m interested in.
    I’m not interested in anything.
    I’m interested in everything.

    • If you find yourself in any of these situations, schedule an appointment with Career Services in order to take an assessment to examine your skills, values, and interests.
  • I don’t know what majors are offered.
  • I know what I want to major in, but I don’t know what I can do with it.
I know what I want to do, but not what to major in.
I know what I want to do, but HWS doesn’t have a major for that.
